Big Premieres For Thanskgiving Weekend

NEW YORK (CBS New York) — An early start to the weekend traditionally means some big premieres at the movies and this time we’re getting a musical, an action flick, an animated tale and a romantic comedy that takes a look at the power of love.

In “Love and Other Drug,” Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal star as a couple who after an accidental meeting start a light-hearted affair — no strings attached.

As it is with love, emotions can sometimes take over and both characters are soon forced to re-examine what they want — and there may be even more at stake.

Thanksgiving weekend is a time for family, so why not catch the new Disney flick “Tangled.”

The film is a very modern take on the fairy tale “Rapunzel.” The move features the voice of Mandy Moore as the long-haired girl trapped in a tower and Zachary Levi as Flynn Rider — the most wanted man in the kingdom.

When Flynn helps the damsel in distress break out of the tower the two go off on quite the adventure.

Looking for some action? Why not check out “Faster.”

Dwayne Johnson is Driver, a man on a mission to take out the people who killed his brother and Billy Bob Thorton is the cop hot on his trail.

And then, there’s “Burlesque.”

Academy Award winner Cher is Tess. She runs the Los Angeles theater where a small town girl Ali, played by Christina Aguilera, is hoping to hit it big.

Also in select theaters: “The Nutcracker in 32,” starring Elle Fanning and Nathan Lane; “The King’s Speech” with Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham-Carter.

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has said he has no hard feelings toward New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, after he body-slammed Christie’s humorous attempt to sell a pension-reform plan.

As WCBS 880’s Monica Miller reported, the former pro-wrestler and actor asked Christie’s staff to take down a trailer that it posted to YouTube for a mock summer blockbuster titled “No Pain. No Gain.”

Monica Miller reports

The video originally included a shot of Johnson, but a new version without Johnson was posted Wednesday.

The governor‘s office said the version of the video with Johnson was pulled down at the request of Johnson’s lawyers. A tweet on Christie’s account joked Wednesday that “Unfortunately The Rock is on high demand & won’t be able to appear in our Summer flick.”

The original one-minute, 22-second video included starring credits for “Governor Christie,” “The People of New Jersey,” “The Rock” and “The NJ Legislature (Hopefully …).” It claimed the fake film is rated R for “reform.”

Johnson is reportedly a registered Republican and spoke at the 2000 Republican National Convention.

He said he has no bad feelings Christie and considers him a buddy.

Man Convicted Of Beating Former Friend To Death On Streets Of Newark

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A jury in Newark convicted a man Wednesday of stomping and kicking another man in the head until he died.

Dwayne Johnson, 43, was convicted by an Essex County jury Wednesday of first-degree murder, for killing Terrence Everett, 38.

The attack happened on Jan. 7, 2013, and was caught on video by a passerby.

Johnson and Everett had been friends, but got into a quarrel after Johnson’s girlfriend asked Everett for cigarettes, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s office. Their feud continued through December 2012, and Everett ended up punching Johnson’s girlfriend, prosecutors said.

Ten days later, Johnson attacked Everett in broad daylight at Avon Avenue and South 20th Street in Newark. He stomped and kicked him in the head until he died, prosecutors said.

Everett then left, and police found Everett’s body bleeding from the head, prosecutors said.

“We’re satisfied with the jury’s verdict. It sends a clear message that the citizens of Essex County will not tolerate an individual resorting to violent revenge resulting in murder as a means to resolve a dispute,’’ Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Ahmad Rasool said in a news release.

Johnson faces a minimum of 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced Jan. 12 by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Michael Ravin.

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — A man was sentenced to 54 years in prison Monday for stomping and kicking another man in the head until he died in Newark two years ago.

Dwayne Johnson, 43, was convicted by an Essex County jury in November of first-degree murder, for killing Terrence Everett, 38.

Superior Court Judge Michael L. Ravin on Monday sentenced Johnson to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison for the murder, as well as another four years for theft after Johnson went through Everett’s pockets after killing him, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s office.

Johnson must serve the sentences consecutively, and must serve about 42 years before he is eligible for parole. He has been in prison since he was firs charged in January 2013.

Everett then left, and police found Everett’s body bleeding from the head, prosecutors said.

Johnson also rifled through Everett’s pockets after he stomped Everett to death, prosecutors said.

A passerby videotaped the attack, prosecutors said.

Assistant Prosecutor Ahmad Rasool said Johnson never took responsibility or showed remorse, and asked for a life sentence, prosecutors said.

“This defendant stomped a man to death in broad daylight on a public street but he seems to want to point the finger at everyone else,’’ Rasool, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Paul Bradley, said in a news release.

WWE Sets Sights On Hollywood

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson exited the wrestling ring to become a global box office king, and John Cena is attempting to follow suit. Now World Wrestling Entertainment is going all-in on Hollywood. The company is hoping to keep its next breakout star in house and will make significant investments to grow its production arm, WWE Studios.

The company will expand production of reality television, scripted content, as well as animated projects and digital content, according to Deadline. The move comes on the heels of the successes of the reality shows Total Divas and spinoff Total Bellas. Mike Johnson of PWInsider also recently reported WWE is actively shopping a reality show following the lives of Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and his wife and fellow WWE superstar Maryse.

Since its inception in 2002, WWE Studios has only been minimally profitable and recently has proven to be a drain on the company’s finances. The division posted a loss of $3.9 million for the first three quarters of this year. However, revenue has increased to $9 million during the same period, which is a $1.3 million jump from 2016.

Like Johnson, WWE Studios is hoping to strike it big on the small screen as well as the box office. The new initiative places increased emphasis on creating television and online content, but production of feature films will continue. The company is currently shooting the latest installment of The Marine franchise. Mizanin has taken over the leading role after Cena starred in the first film.

>>MORE: From the world of Pro Wrestling

WWE talents are expected to continue starring in many of the studio’s projects moving forward.

“We look forward to identifying key partners to work alongside us while creating opportunities to use our on-screen WWE talent in new and exciting ways,” WWE Studios president Michael Luisi told Deadline.

WWE patriarch and chairman Vince McMahon says the studio is open for business.

“Given the size of our fanbase and their appetite for WWE programming well beyond our core in-ring shows, this is the ideal time to further establish the WWE brand with new genres across platforms,” McMahon said.

WWE Studios is currently partnering with Johnson’s Seven Buck Production to produce Fighting with My Family, in what could be its biggest soiree at the box office to date. The film is based on the life of current performer Saraya-Jade “Paige” Bevis, who recently returned to the ring following a year-long absence due to injury and multiple wellness-policy suspensions. The studio tapped into star power for the film, with Johnson playing himself and Vince Vaughn also having a significant role. The movie is schedule to be released next year.

Here and There

David Otunga’s status with WWE remains unclear now that his wife, singer Jennifer Hudson, has voluntarily dropped an order of protection against him. Hudson has granted temporary custody of their eight-year-old son to Otunga while she films The Voice UK in London, according to TMZ. She originally told police she became fearful after the actor/wrestler allegedly acted in an aggressive and threatening manner toward her. Otunga, who had been featured as a panelist on pay-per-view kickoff shows, has been absent from broadcasts since the allegations first surfaced. WWE did not respond to an inquiry about his future with the company.

WWE WrestleMania Card Rumors And PPV Changes

$

By Chuck Carroll

With WrestleMania season in full swing, there is no shortage of news and rumors coming out of WWE. Major questions surround the main event of the company’s biggest pay-per-view of the year.

From the mainstream media standpoint, WWE stands to gain an inordinate amount of coverage from Ronda Rousey‘s appearance on the show. In fact, although she is not on the card, she will be essentially headlining The Elimination Chamber pay-per-view on February 25, when she signs her contract in the ring. Once pen is put to paper at the final RAW-brand premium show before “the granddaddy of ‘em all,” the question then becomes who will she face and her first match. There is speculation that Vince McMahon is doubling down on a mainstream press grab by kicking around the idea of having Rousey team with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Any match featuring Johnson is sure to be mentioned in the Hollywood trade magazines, nightly news shows, entertainment reports, major newspapers, radio shows, etc. But adding the biggest name in UFC history into the mix with Hollywood’s biggest box office draw gets the type of major international press that money cannot buy. That is exactly the type of attention that McMahon craves.

There has been talk that the pair would face Triple H and Stephanie McMahon in a mixed tag match, pitting two of the most recognizable names globally against WWE’s power couple. For reasons unknown, oddsmakers have become enamored with the idea of having Rousey team with Braun Strowman in her debut match. That plan seems to make little sense given a report in The Wrestling Observer that Strowman is penciled in to challenge The Miz for the Intercontinental Title in New Orleans. Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated is reporting other possible suitors for Rousey include Kurt Angle, Shane McMahon and Seth Rollins.

>>MORE: 15 Things You Didn’t Know About WWE Giant Braun Strowman

Nevertheless, current odds of a Rousey-Strowman vs. McMahon-Triple H match stand at 3/1. If I’m a betting man, I’d feel comfortable plopping down a few dollars on that not happening.

Meanwhile, the annual Undertaker watch is underway. After hinting at retirement following his loss at last year‘s WrestleMania, The Dead Man taking on John Cena has been rumored to be another possible top match on this year’s card. Both are now semi-retired — one more so than the other — but the match would certainly entice even the most jaded hustle, loyalty, respect haters.

Cena even dropped a hint about the possible match on this past Monday’s RAW. However, it should be noted that Cena enjoys having a little fun at the expense of the internet wrestling community. When there was rapt speculation that a Cena heel turn was imminent a couple years ago, he physically turned his heel during an in-ring promo, which ratcheted up the rumor mill. So where will this one lead? There will be no answers for another couple weeks. Cena says his only road to WrestleMania is through a victory at Elimination Chamber. But don’t count on that. A Cena win there doesn’t seem to make much sense, even if he’s not facing Undertaker.

>>MORE: 16 Things You Didn’t Know About WWE Superstar John Cena

In another interesting note, the odds of Daniel Bryan having a match at WrestleMania have increased to 5/1, according to bookmakers. That is a significant change from the 25/1 odds given last summer. Bryan has made his intention to continue his wrestling career very clear. However, he’s also insisted the chances of an in-ring return occurring in WWE are minimal. But think for a second how great of a story it would be for Bryan to wrestle his return match at the site of his greatest in-ring triumph.

Big changes also appear to be on the horizon for WWE following WrestleMania. The company seems to be dropping the idea of brand-exclusive pay-per-views in favor of having both the RAW and SmackDown rosters compete on each show. Ticket holders for WWE Backlash on May 6 received an email from Ticketmaster informing them that there will be SmackDown matches on what was once a RAW-exclusive show.

WWE has not responded to a request for comment.

Pro Wrestling News: Rock Thinks Drew McIntyre Could Be WWE’s Next Big Star

(CBS New York/CBS Local) — With all the news surrounding WWE’s recent decline, not to mention Vince McMahon’s efforts to stem the tide (and his subsequent comments), it’s easy to forget all the other pro wrestling news. And there’s a lot of it. So let’s take a spin around the world of pro wrestling.

Dwayne Johnson attends the premiere of Universal Pictures' "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw" at Dolby Theatre on July 13, 2019 in Hollywood, California.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson heaped praise on Drew McIntyre recently when asked who the next big star in WWE could be. “I think he’s got a great look and a great build,” he told TMZ Sports. “Especially as he continues to hone in on his craft and connect with the audience, which is always the most important thing.”

Brock Lesnar’s contract runs through next year’s WrestleMania, according to The Wrestling Observer.

Lesnar is a slight favorite to retain the Universal Championship against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam. Becky Lynch is favored to defeat Natalya and retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Bayley has odds over Ember Moon for the RAW Women’s Championship.

After declaring that he would be “taking himself out of the weeds” in terms of creative direction,  Vince McMahon, according to The Wrestling Observer, called for a complete rewrite of this week’s SmackDown just hours before the live broadcast.

Despite having feuded on camera with The Miz and Shawn Michaels, Dolph Ziggler will face Goldberg at SummerSlam, according to Dave Meltzer of The Wrestling Observer. The match would be Goldberg’s first since a disastrous showing against The Undertaker two months ago in Saudi Arabia in which he suffered a concussion.

Daniel Bryan is expected to be revealed as the mysterious person who caused scaffolding to collapse on Roman Reigns in the final segment of SmackDown. The pair are being advertised locally to have a match in a number of markets after SummerSlam. Meltzer is also reporting they will square off at SummerSlam.

In an interview with TMZ Sports promoting the theatrical release of Hobbs & Shaw, Reigns states that he can see himself wrestling full-time for another five years. “I’m still a young man. I’m 34, I still have a few more years in me of just being, I think, at the prime of my athletic career. See if I can handle it in the ring, I’m willing to do it,” he said. “I think I can hold this schedule for at least 5 more years of being full-time, but eventually it’s gonna have to be time to rest my body.”

The Big Show, who has been absent from the ring for some time, has been cast to star in an upcoming Netflix family comedy series titled The Big Show Show. The series has been green lit for 10 episodes with filming slated to begin August 9 in Los Angeles.

Viewership for RAW fell 25 percent this week following the special RAW Reunion show one week earlier. Viewership of SmackDown was also down 12 percent, likely hurt by the Democratic debate.

Simone Johnson, Daughter Of The Rock, Trains To Be Fourth-Generation Wrestling Superstar

$

0

(CBSLA/CBS Local) — For Simone Johnson, having The Rock, one of the most successful professional wrestlers of all-time as your father, will open some doors. It also doesn’t hurt that Dwayne Johnson one of the top-grossing movie stars in the world. But that is where the advantages stop for WWE’s newest signee.

There is a tough road ahead for the 18-year-old daughter of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as she attempts to become the first fourth-generation Superstar in sports entertainment history. She’s not just following in her father’s famous footsteps, but also those of her grandfather Rocky Johnson and her great grandfather “High Chief” Peter Maivia, both of whom are members of the WWE Hall of Fame.

The expectations are sky-high for Simone Johnson as she begins training at the WWE Performance Center. While wrestling is an industry where most performers crave the spotlight, few would welcome the intense media crush she is already experiencing without having competed in her first match.

Count Paul “Triple H” Levesque among those not envious of her position.

“In every conceivable format and every conceivable level, people are talking about it,” he told reporters this week.

Levesque has acquired what many would consider to be a lifetime’s worth of wisdom during his nearly 30 years in the business. His career includes 14 world championship reigns and membership in WWE Hall of Fame as part of the famed Degeneration X faction. He is also the current Executive Vice President, Talent, Live Events & Creative for the company. Yet, not even Levesque feels like he’s in a position to counsel the younger Johnson about certain realities of wrestling given her unique pedigree. Instead, the father of three is leaving that up to her own larger-than-life parents.

“I don’t think that there’s any advice I could give her that she doesn’t have already coming at her from her dad and her mom,” he said. “They will know the challenges that she will face of being the Rock’s daughter.”

>>READ: Latest from the world of Pro Wrestling

In many respects, Simone Johnson finds herself facing the same obstacles that still challenge Charlotte Flair, daughter of “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair. Despite having won nine championships and headlining WrestleMania, she faces criticism from some who say she has been handed everything on a silver platter.

“To this day, she still deals with that,” said Levesque. “[People say], ‘Well, she gets what she gets because of her dad. She’s pushed because of her dad. She’s this because of her dad.’”

But Levesque, who has had a ringside seat to her entire career and watched her grow into one of the most recognizable women to ever set foot in a WWE ring, says the idea that she’s still riding her father’s coattails is absurd.

“Charlotte earned everything. Every single thing that’s put in front of her, she earned,” he said. “But yet she’s still questioned on it, and that’s tough.”

Levesque expects the same for Simone Johnson. Nothing will be gift-wrapped for the teenager, and all opportunities must be earned.

It may not be long before opportunities begin to present themselves. As a new recruit, she isn’t shying away from her position as low woman on the totem pole at the WWE Performance Center and isn’t thumbing her nose at even the most remedial jobs. She’s just eager to prove herself.

“The reason she’s in the PC is not because she’s the Rock’s daughter. She had a passion to do this,” Levesque said. “When I say she does everything, I mean she’s putting up the ring, she’s picking up towels, she did everything every time she’s ever been here to prove herself. It’s not a thing like, ‘Well, I’ll just do this for a little bit to show them that I care.’ It’s just who she is.”

It became clear early to Levesque and the other coaches at the Performance Center that she inherited her father’s legendary work ethic that followed him from his days in WWE to his current status as one of biggest box office attractions in the world.

“She’s treated like everybody else here. She’s earned the spot. It’s hers to lose or to keep. It’s hers to succeed at. It’s hers to grab and work harder than everybody else,” said Levesque. “She’s like her dad. She stays humble.”

In listening to Simone Johnson, you get the impression that she would love this business whether her father was a 10-time champion or whether fans never quite smelled what he was cooking. Being part of WWE makes her feel like the 10-year-old little girl who fell in love with wrestling after watching countless hours of decades-old matches with her grandmother. It was those viewing parties, not watching her father compete, that truly piqued her interest.

Yet, one of her fondest memories is of sitting ringside and watching her dad wrestle in front of the nearly 80,000 fans who packed SunLife Stadium in his hometown of Miami for WrestleMania 28.

“I was so happy because I’d always seen him act, but to see him do something different and see him do something I know we both really connected with, it was amazing,” she said in an interview with Cathy Kelley posted online by WWE.

It was while her father was training to wrestle the following year that she first stepped into the ring. It was a moment that brought crystal clarity to her future.

“I was 11. At the time, my dad was preparing to come back for WrestleMania 29. He was training and one day he brought me with him,” she recalled. “To be able to just finally be in a ring, it was kind of surreal to me and it just further cemented the idea that I knew this is what I want to do.”

Both parents have given their blessing for her to chase her own WrestleMania moment. Now she’s taking the ball and running with it.

As for the scrutiny? The teen is handling it with grace thus far and remains calm under pressure. She knew it would be there, and perhaps it just comes as part of the package of being the daughter of two Hollywood titans.

“I do feel pressure, but I know that at the end of the day it’s something that is always going to be there,” she said. “I know it’s up to me to take that pressure and use it to just motivate myself.”

If pressure is in fact her great motivator, she’s making sure it’s in no short supply. When not throwing punches in the ring, Simone Johnson is hitting the books in pursuit of a college degree.

She’s not just following in her father’s footsteps, either. Her mother, Dany Garcia, is one of the biggest producers in the entertainment business. So, naturally, Simone plans to major in entertainment management.

“My parents have always been really big on me going to college and furthering my education,” she said. “I want to make them proud and I also want that for myself. In my head I knew that I always was going to have to balance them both. Keeping that in mind is how I’m able to do it.”

Between classes at school and at the Performance Center there isn’t much downtime, not that she wants any and not that anyone would expect that she would anyway. It’s just not in her DNA.

Knowing that makes her future boss confident that she will rise to the top no matter what challenges arise.

“I see it in her, I believe it. She will go to any length to succeed at this because of the passion that she has for it,” Levesque said. “If there’s anything that I feel like I can offer to her here and this team can offer her in the Performance Center is the ability to stay strong and be able to get through all the stuff that’s going to come her way because of her last name. Because of who her family is that’s going to take a strong person, but she can do it. She has that resolve.”

‘The Rock’ Thanks N.J. Volunteer Firefighters With Surprise Gifts

RIDGEFIELD, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — It was a special delivery.

A New Jersey fire station received a gift from a Hollywood superstar.

CBS2’s Cory James has more on how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson touched a team of first responders.

The Ridgefield Volunteer Fire Department responds to about 400 calls each year, but a couple weeks ago Chief David Brierty got a call no one was expecting.

“I got a phone call from the First Responder’s Children’s Foundation. They were like, listen, we need to meet you tomorrow,” Brierty said.

Video shows that meeting, as the organization’s president, Jillian Crane, stood in front of Engine 2’s firefighters and read a letter from “The Rock.”

“To the bad-ass firefighters, As a small ‘Mahalo’ for all you do from myself and Under Armour, here’s my newly released Project Rock PR3s,” Johnson wrote.

“We didn’t know anything about the sneaker,” Brierty said. “It’s an unreal feeling of generosity and kindness and it’s like getting a big hug and a big thank you.”

PR3s are Johnson’s the new sneaker line and the gift amounts to about 100 pairs.

It’s gesture Brierty said was humbling.

“We’re there for people. It’s very rare that people are there for us,” he said.

The borough’s mayor, Anthony Suarez, told James it’s nice to see his workers, who labor for free, get rewarded for their service.

“I regularly hear the calls and these men and women are out there responding and assisting, and they are essential,” Suarez said.

They are men and women who now have a new pair of sneakers to remind them of how much they are valued by their community and a celebrity.

“They are honestly probably one of the most comfortable pair of sneakers I’ve ever owned and I will keep wearing them, that’s for sure,” Brierty said, adding when asked if was just saying that because a superstar like The Rock gave them as a gift, “Umm, maybe, but definitely they are very comfortable shoes.”
